Your Guide to Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to add or restore volume to the breasts using implants. Women choose this surgery for a variety of reasons, from correcting asymmetry to boosting self-confidence.

  • Enhancing Size - To enlarge the size of natural breasts.

  • Correcting Asymmetry - To make breasts appear more symmetrical.

  • Restoring Volume - To regain volume lost due to weight fluctuations or pregnancy.

  • Addressing Congenital Issues - To correct conditions like tubular breasts.

  • Boosting Confidence - To improve self-esteem and body image.

  • This procedure can be combined with other surgeries, like a breast lift or breast reduction, to achieve the best possible result. Overall, women who undergo breast augmentation are highly satisfied with their outcome.

Your Initial Consultation

During your first consultation, Dr. Lesesne will review your general health, discuss your desired results, and help you understand your options. We will consider factors such as your chest diameter, natural breast shape, and skin elasticity to recommend the best implant choice for you.

Choosing the Right Breast Implant

Significant innovations in implant manufacturing now offer patients more options than ever. The choice of implant depends on your desired look and the degree of enlargement you want. The two primary types of FDA-approved implants are silicone and saline.

  • Silicone Gel Implants
Silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Often called "gummy bear" implants, they are available in a broad range of sizes and shapes to mimic the look and feel of natural breasts. They can have a smooth or textured outer finish.

  • Saline Implants
Saline implants have a silicone rubber shell filled with a sterile saline solution. They feature a small valve that allows Dr. Lesesne to fill the implant to the desired amount, making minor size adjustments possible during surgery.

Implant Placement

There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to breast augmentation. Dr. Lesesne will recommend the best surgical technique and implant placement based on your anatomy and desired results. Implants can be positioned either under or over the pectoral muscle.

Above the Pectoral Muscle

Placing the implant above the muscle is the most straightforward technique. This is often the best solution for:

  • Women with breast ptosis (sagging).

  • Women who are post-pregnancy or have breastfed.

  • Athletic women.

  • Women with muscle or rib deformities.

  • Patients who desire maximum cleavage.

  • This approach places the implant between the breast tissue and the chest muscle. It allows for the insertion of large implants and does not interfere with breastfeeding.

Below the Pectoral Muscle

Placing the implant below the pectoral muscle is a technique where the implant is positioned partially under the chest muscle. This is often recommended for:

  • Thin or petite women.

  • Those with a history of capsular contracture.

  • Women with wound healing issues.

  • Those with a family history of breast cancer.

  • Patients who have had multiple previous breast biopsies.

  • This placement offers a more natural look and may have a lower risk of capsular contracture. It also results in less mammogram distortion.

Breast Augmentation Incisions

Dr. Lesesne makes a small, easily hidden incision. The location is determined by your anatomy, implant type, and desired outcome. Incision options include:

  • Axilla: An incision in the underarm crease.

  • Areola: A periareolar incision at the bottom half of the areola.

  • Inframammary: An incision in the fold of the breast.

  • Umbilical: A trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) incision in the navel.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Recovery from breast augmentation is typically quick, with most healthy individuals feeling well within 1–2 days. Some swelling and soreness may last up to a week.

Sutures are usually removed within 5–7 days. It can take a few weeks for implants to settle into their final, natural-looking position. You should wait at least three months to see the final results.
